16th December makes us proud as Indians, having defeated Pakistan in the 1971 war, but the shame that ebbs out that pride almost immediately is overwhelming.

For it is on this very day that a girl, a promising student, ‘Jyoti Singh’ was brutally raped in the streets of Delhi and India and the world woke up and took notice of the country’s rape epidemic- no longer talking of it in hushed tones.

A year on changes have been made only on paper even as Sexual Violence against Women continues and the UPA Government pays lip service in the name of a unutilized Nirbhaya Fund and unimplemented Sexual Harrasment Law.
