In a gruesome event, a North Eastern college student, Nido Taniam, was allegedly killed by some unruly people. To condemn this shocking and barbaric act a Condolence get together of north east student & professionals was organized by Shri Sunil Deodhar ji on 5-2-14 at Gujarat Bhawan with Hon’ble chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji.

The leader of opposition Sh. Arun Jaitley & Deputy Leader of opposition Sh. Ravi Shankar Prasad ji & Former MP Sh. Kiren Rijiju were also present. The program started with a brain storming discussion on various issues & problems faced by the people from North east India. The main concern was the disrespect to the identity of North easterners as an Indian. Secondly they are exploited by the police & different Authorities at various level as there is lack of sensitization & awareness about North East. People tease them for their looks, features, appearance, hair style etc. which agitates the them to react. North east has been disadvantaged politically & historically. Less Road, Airlines, infrastructure has been developed there.

Sh. Narendra Modi ji said that this kind of brutal act is a very serious matter. This gruesome act should develop sensitivity towards north east. He said that the exchange of police force especially women police, within the states, as has been the practice in Gujarat, will surely sensitize the authorities & enhance the awareness among the people of rest of India. In metropolis, there should be sufficient hostels, educational institutions & other arrangements for the people of North east India. The main focus should be on developing the resources & infrastructure in the states of North east.

Sh. Arun Jaitley ji said that the need is to address the pain of north easterners. Some efficient mechanism needs to be evolved to address & sensitize the Police, administration & Leaders towards them.

Shri Sunil Deodhar assured the people of north east India that their respect, dignity and interests will be protected and action will be taken. He said that during his long stay in different states of North east India, he has observed their problems & issues very closely. With a suitable strategy, timely action and capable leadership, the problems can be solved & the situation can be improved. The Get Together program concluded with a note that the north east regions are part of India and the people of North East deserve the respect of being an Indian.
